How to Convert Military Time by Hand

The converter above does the work for you, but the math is simple enough to do in your head. There are only two rules.

Military Time to Standard Time

If the time is 1200 or higher, subtract 12 from the hour to get the PM time.

Example 1730 → 17 minus 12 = 5:30 PM

If the time is below 1200, just read the hour and add AM. Drop the leading zero if there is one.

Example 0845 → 8:45 AM

Standard Time to Military Time

If the time is PM, add 12 to the hour.

Example 3:15 PM → 3 plus 12 = 1515

If the time is AM, keep the hour the same. Add a leading zero for single digit hours.

Example 7:00 AM → 0700

Watch Out for These Two

Midnight is 0000 in military time. Not 1200, not 2400 (though 2400 is sometimes used to mark the end of a day). Midnight catches people off guard because 12:00 AM feels like it should be 1200, but that's actually noon.

Noon is 1200 in military time. No math needed. 12:00 PM is just 1200. The tricky part is remembering that the next hour is 1300 (1:00 PM), not 100.

Frequently Asked Questions

Add 12 to the hour. For example, 3:00 PM becomes 1500 (3 plus 12 = 15). 9:45 PM becomes 2145 (9 plus 12 = 21, then add the 45 minutes). The minutes never change, only the hour.
Midnight is 0000. You may also see 2400 used to mark the end of a day, but 0000 is the standard way to write midnight. It means the very start of a new day. Don't confuse it with 1200, which is noon.
Noon is 1200 in military time. It's the one time of day where military time and the regular 12 hour clock show the same number. After noon, military time keeps counting up (1300, 1400, 1500) while regular time resets to 1:00 PM.
To prevent confusion between AM and PM. In situations where a mistake could cost lives, like medication schedules, troop movements, or emergency response, there is no room for guessing whether someone means 8 in the morning or 8 at night. Military time removes that ambiguity completely. 0800 is always morning. 2000 is always evening. No exceptions.
It depends on the context. The US military typically writes time without colons, like 1430. International 24 hour time (used by European countries, airlines, and the ISO 8601 standard) uses colons, like 14:30. Both mean the same thing. Our converter accepts either format.
Hospitals, police departments, fire stations, airlines, trains, amateur radio operators, and most countries outside the United States all use the 24 hour clock as their default time format. It's actually the most common way to tell time worldwide. The 12 hour AM/PM system is mainly used in the US, Canada, Australia, and a handful of other countries.
